Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, usually appears as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the nail. As it spreads deeper, it can cause changes in the color of the nail, and lead to thickening and crumbling of the nail. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, approximately 12% of the population has nail fungus. And while toenails are affected more frequently than fingernails, the problem can be easily spread and is notoriously difficult to treat.

We understand you’re frustrated, and you just want your clear, healthy toenails back. . . . and we can help! For those tough-to-treat infections, combine laser and topical antifungals for optimal results.

One other significant benefit of laser therapy is that it can easily and safely be used in combination with other fungal toenail treatments to get even better results. You do not have to choose one or the other. Quite often, we recommend that our patients (especially those with particularly severe fungal toenails) combine laser therapy and topical treatments. And while topicals aren’t always especially effective when used on their own, they make a great “companion” for laser therapy. When using both together, results tend to come more quickly, and overall success rates are higher. Plus, we can thin your toenails for you when you come in for your laser therapy sessions, making it extremely convenient.

During the procedure, pulses of light are gently delivered to the nail and nail bed.  The laser simultaneously sends heat into the deep layers of the nail and nail bed killing the fungus while leaving the healthy tissue unharmed.  Patients have minimal to no discomfort, side effects, discoloration, or loss of nails after this procedure.

This latest technology offers a non-invasive, non-toxic treatment, which is fast and effective for treating toenail fungus. For the best results, the treatment requires typically four to six, 30-minute sessions at our Laser & Wellness Center. Healthy new growth will typically begin to be visible in about 3 months, while it can take 6 to 12 months for the entire clear nail to emerge.  The laser treatment will not cause your toenails to discolor or fall off and you can resume your activities without any downtime.
